Box Sets 5036193099984 Editorial Review
** Tenko - The Complete Series [DVD]** "Tenko" emerges as a powerful and memorable television series, celebrated for its compelling narrative and strong character portrayals, rooted in the harrowing experiences of women internees during World War II. Originally aired in the 1980s, its unique focus on an all-female ensemble cast, set against the backdrop of the fall of Singapore and subsequent internment, continues to resonate with audiences today, both old fans and newcomers alike. Viewers Consistently praise the series for its depth and the opportunity to witness character growth over 30 hours of storytelling. The performances of the cast are highlighted as exceptional; Stephanie Cole, Patricia Lawrence, and particularly Veronica Roberts receive commendations for their ability to convincingly chart the emotional and physical transformation of their characters amidst the trials of war. Though some aspects of the show's presentation show their age—such as the cinematography and a slower pace characterized by extensive dialogue—these elements are often seen as a part of its charm, allowing for deeper engagement with the characters and their stories. The series' progression through different phases of the characters' lives, from the brutal experiences in the camps to their reintegration into society post-war, provides a rich tapestry of human experience. While the latter seasons may veer into "soapier" territory with dramatic intrigues, they still manage to deliver powerful stories and memorable moments that keep the audience invested in the characters’ journeys. Overall, "Tenko" is recommended as a landmark series, not only for its historical context but also for its profound emotional impact and the extraordinary performances of its cast. The blend of well-researched historical accuracy with beautifully developed characters creates an enduring series that can be appreciated in any era. **
