Babası, kral Şuddhodana idi. Doğum yeri Lumbini Bahçesi, aydınlanmaya ulaştığı yer olan Bodhgaya, ilk vaazını verdiği Varanasi'deki Geyik Parkı ve ölüm yeri Kisunagari, Budistlerin en kutsal dört hac mekanı oldu.Japonya'nın modern dönemdeki en büyük Budizm uzmanı Prof. Hajime Nakamura, bütün akademik hayatını bu konuya vakfetmiş, Çince ve Sanskrit başta olmak üzere çeşitli dillerden kutsal Budist metinlerini çevirmiş ve yorumlamıştır. Kitabında, tarihte yaşamış gerçek bir insan olan Gotama'yı, din kurucusu bilge Budha'dan ayırabilmek amacıyla, en eski Budist ve Budist olmayan metinler üzerinde eleştirel çözümlemeler yapmaktadır. Ayrıca Nakamura, Budha'nın hayatındaki efsanevi ögeleri dışlayabilmek için onun bulunduğu yerlerde on yıllarca süren incelemelerde bulunmuş ve akademik çalışmanın diğer yöntemlerini kullanmıştır.
