The number represents the amount of electro conductivity in the water, which means the level of dissolved solvents of which minerals are the most common. Although dissolved solids may be both good and bad, the TDS meter only provides data on the level of dissolved minerals that are present. The device is not waterproof, so it cannot be placed in moist soil. It comes ready to use, and it does not contain mercury.
