Horror Editorial Review
**** Dario Argento's "Phenomena," initially released in 1985, has found new life with this 2-disc Blu-ray from Arrow Video, showcasing the film’s long-cut Italian version, which includes various scenes omitted from its previous US release, "Creepers." The film, although met with mixed reactions upon release, combines elements of horror, fantasy, and Argento’s signature over-the-top violence, all wrapped in a dreamlike atmosphere enhanced by the chilling soundtrack. Viewers have praised the pristine picture quality, noting a significant upgrade from earlier formats, despite some concern over the use of digital noise reduction which may soften the grainy texture film enthusiasts often cherish. Nevertheless, the transfer has been deemed impressive, with vibrant colors and clear details that breathe new life into this underappreciated classic. The strong performances of a young Jennifer Connelly and Daria Nicolodi, alongside bizarre plot elements—including a girl who communicates with insects and a killer dwarf—add to the film's unique charm, ensuring it remains memorable. The special features accompany the film well, including a substantial making-of documentary and discussions with key collaborators, though some fans lament the absence of certain extras from previous DVD releases. The Blu-ray is adaptable to region-free NTSC players, making it accessible for a wider audience. Overall, this release pays homage to a film many Consider to be a cult classic. In essence, Arrow Video’s Blu-ray of "Phenomena" is warmly received among fans and collectors, solidifying its reputation as a worthwhile addition for both novice viewers and Argento aficionados alike. **
